More and more children are subjected to tonsillectomies. The number of surgeries in children younger than 15 years old has enhanced essentially.
After tonsillectomy or adenotonsillectomy children may suffer from vomiting and nausea. Thus, doctors indicate using corticosteroids during operations in order to lower these post-operation negative reactions.
Unfortunately, while corticosteroids reduce risks/severity related to nausea and vomiting, they are associated with several other dangers. They may lead to bleeding during and after tonsillectomies. Several studies have manifested that the number of complications after tonsillectomies has enhanced during some last years. Since number of tonsillectomies becomes more increased, complications appear more often as well.
Some scientists decided to know whether bleeding occurs after tonsillectomies on account of corticosteroids. They tried to find out whether there is any essential difference in appearing of bleeding between kids who administer the corticosteroid dexamethasone during tonsillectomies and those who are not given this drug. Thus, the scientists enrolled more than 300 children in the research.
Results of the research have showed that bleeding of the levels I and II are increased by 5% in those that apply a single dosage of dexamethasone during tonsillectomy.
So, corticosteroids don’t maximize the risk connected with post-operation bleeding obviously. However scientists doubt about safety of corticosteroids taken during tonsillectomies, they don’t increase severe bleeding events significantly.
